COVID 19

24 March 2020

Emergency Plan for My Animals

In just a few weeks time we have gone from living very normal lives with anticipation and excitement for what 2020 will hold, to a time where uncertainty has become the norm. Many of us have gone from a normal life with jobs and activities to being essentially locked down at home. Many have people in their inner circles that are ill.

As COVID19 progresses we all need to take stock of the situation. Planning needs to be made for the upcoming times in many aspects of our lives. One easily overlooked consideration is what happens to our animals if we become ill or worse, pass away. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE HELPING YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ANIMALS AND THERE IS A PLAN.

Given the speed at which COVID19 can go from being just a nuisance to a very serious situation, all people with animals in their homes must make a clear and easily located plan to assure that animals are well taken care of in the event First Responders arrive and an exit from the home is necessary. This plan needs to be in an easily found place, with clear and concise instructions.

REMEMBER IN THIS DAY AND TIME OF LOCK-DOWN, SHELTER IN PLACE or QUARANTINE, THE OPTION OF ANIMAL CONTROL TO ARRIVE AND ASSIST or TAKE OVER CARE MAY NOT BE AN OPTION. Many of these facilities have closed for the duration, even farming out animals to keep people company at home.

There is a link below to a universal form for any kind of animal that can be filled out and left near your front door or other prominent place so it would be noticed and hopefully acted upon.

The form provides for 3 different people to be listed so that if one is ill or unable to take care of the animals, there are 2 back up people available. Please contact the people on your list so they know they are part of the plan. Have a plan, have a backup plan, have a back up to the back up plan.

Think carefully about who could step up for your pets. Is it a family member, neighbor, friend, breeder, rescue where your pet came from. Think things though. Is the person you have chosen able to travel? Are they under Shelter in Place Orders. Would the person picking up your pets be susceptible to COVID19?

Please click the button below to access the form. Please make a plan so that your animals can have the proper care that they deserve.

Wishing all of you the best during this difficult time.
